Indonesian Folktale : THE GERMINAL OF REOG PONOROGO SHOW

Once upon a time, in the land of Java, there was lived a very charming and beautiful princess in Kediri Kingdom. Her name was Princess Sanggalangit. She was also smart and kind, many Prince wanted to marry with her. But Princess Sanggalangit was not want to marry yet. And this made The King and peoples becomes confuse. So, The King asked and beg her, cause King realy wants to have grandchild.

After three days of praying, Finally Princess Sanggalangit agreed to marry. But, she raising some term. Her husband later, must be able to made a some interesting show for their wedding performance, that never been performed before.

That show such like dance with ‘gamelan’( The Original Music instruments from Java, such as, gong, gendang etc) music , that equipped with 140 twin horses and last must presenting an animal that have 2 head. The King announcing this competition to all of peoples in his country. Anybody can join.

Finally only two participant left. They promising to granting the Princess’s request. They are King Singabarong from Lodaya Kingdom. And Prince Kelana Swandana from Bandarangin Kingdom. The king of Kediri is so surprised. Cause, Singabarong King is a bizarre human with a lion’s head and his attitude is like an animal and very cruel. And Prince Kelana Swandana is a handsome and gallant Prince. But, He is a homosexual man, who often order some boy to be flirted. The Princess only can surrender. Cause she can’t denied her promise.

Then, competition between Singabarong and Kelana Swandana happening. But, Singabarong uses an unfair and dishonest way. He sending his spy to spying Kelana Swandana. And he catty. Cause Kelana Swandana’s show almost finish. But he still cant find an animal which has 2 heads.

But, Prince Kelana Swandana know his insincerity. Kelana Swandana very angry and he performing a war secretly and suddenly. So Singabarong and his people doesn’t know and have no prepare yet. So, Kelana Swandana and their army can win easily. Singabarong doesn’t know what happening out there cause he is relaxing in Taman Sari with his peacock on his head. That peacock is pecking flea in his head. Coz, as a half human half lion, he had too much flea’s on his head just like an animal.

Finally, Kelana Swandana finding Singabarong in Taman Sari and ask him to fight with him. So Battle happening and Kelana Swandana won. Kelana Swandana uses his magic whip to whipping Singabarong’s and peacock’s head. Fantastically, Singabarong’s head and Peacock’s head becomes patching. And Singabarong becomes an animal with two head. One is lion’s head. And other is peacocks head.

Cause Kelana Swandana equipping of Princess Sanggalangit’s term, he came to Kediri Kingdom to marry with Princess Sanggalangit and he promised he wont be a homosexual anymore. Kelana Swandana bring Princess Sanggalangit to the Bandarangin. An other name of Bandarangin is ‘Ponorogo’. And Finally that show named by ‘Reog Ponorogo’.

And for your info, Ponorogo is one of city in East Java Province. My both parents was also born in East Java Province. My mom exactly was born in Madiun city, and my dad was in Magetan City. Their racism is Javanese, same as me. But unfortunately, I cant speak Javanese as perfect as them coz I wasn’t born in Java Island. But however, I still could understand the meaning, everytime some Java Peoples talk by our race language. =D
